Auditions and technician interviews: ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Technician Interviews are Nov. 28-29, 3:30-6 p.m. For technician interviews, students will answer the technician interview questions below.

*If interviewing for a crew head or other leadership position, you must bring additional evidence of your leadership and technical skills for the position for which you are interviewing (portfolios, SM binders, letters of recommendation, etc.).

Sign up to interview. Please bring the first two pages of this document printed and signed to your interview. All grade levels welcome to interview.

Technician interview questions

1. Why do you want to be in tech?
2. Which area of tech are you interested in? Do you have any experience in this tech area or any other tech area? 
3. What’s your theatre background?
4. Would you consider yourself a leader or a follower? When working in a team, what role do you tend to fill most often?
5. How do you keep yourself organized when facing multiple due dates?
6. Describe a time when you had a problem when working on a project with a student, and how you resolved said problem.
7. Are you part of any other club or after-school activity? Do you have any conflicts with the current production schedule?
8. Do you have questions for us?

For crew heads/stage management positions:

1. What makes you the best fit for this role? (Use this opportunity to brag about yourself, and discuss the supporting items you bring with you!)
2. How would you describe your leadership style?
3. How do you plan to serve and support your team?
4. If two peers on your team are arguing during a rehearsal or production, how would you help resolve the issue?
5. If you were in a situation in which your peer is disputing your position as a leader, how would you work with that peer to arrive at a compromise?

For those interviewing for Crew Heads/Stage Management positions, bringing additional evidence (portfolios, SM binders, etc.) is highly encouraged.

Congratulations to all who auditioned and interviewed! High school students: please initial next to your name at the call board in B Hall if you accept your role. Anyone on this list who has not initialed next to their name on or before our first meeting will be assumed as non-participants.

Jeffco Theatre Festival

Students currently enrolled in a theatre class are invited to attend the JeffCo Theatre Festival. This year's festival is on Nov. 10, 8 a.m.-2:45 p.m. at the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts.

The event is free, but students must provide transportation to and from the Arvada Center and a sack lunch.

All students not currently enrolled in Stage Production Management (Theatre IV) must register as nonperforming participants.

Colorado Thespian Conference All-State Musical Number

All-State Musical Number

This year, the Colorado Thespian Conference will open with a musical number featuring Thespians from across the state! If you are interested in auditioning, you must:

1. Access the audition choreography and learn the short routine

2. Record yourself doing the combination. Please be sure to record yourself horizontally (if using your phone) and aim for good lighting. 

3. Choose 16-32 bars of a musical theatre song of your choice

4. Record yourself (either acapella or with accompaniment) singing your chosen musical theatre selection. Again, record horizontally and aim for good lighting. 

5. Log into Thespian Point Tracker to build your profile and submit your audition.

Once your account is created with all of your information and you have added your school and uploaded your audition video, in the menu on the right select “available auditions” and check “Colorado Thespians All State Opening Number,” then click “Apply.” There is no fee to audition.

If you are a senior who is submitting an audition for the opening number and senior university/scholarship auditions, please wait until after the Oct. 20 deadline to upload your university audition according to audition requirements and be sure to click submit.

Students currently enrolled in Theatre IV (Stage Production Management) or were involved in a fall production (fall production or freshman-sophomore show) are invited to attend the Colorado Thespian Conference this year. You do not need to be an inducted Thespian to attend.

This year's conference is Dec. 7-9, 2023 at the Colorado Convention Center. We will be having a required parent ro guardian and student meeting for those interested in attending on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. 

Please note: Students enrolled in Theatre IV (Stage Production Management) are required to attend and compete at the conference.

Jeffco Improv Festival

Students currently enrolled in a theatre class or who participated in the musical are invited to attend the JeffCo Improv Festival. This year's festival is on April 12, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Newman Cente. The cost to attend is $10, and students must register themselves.

The International Thespian Society's points system aims to honor the hard work produced by students in theatre across the country. To be inducted into society is an honor worth celebrating!

• Attending live theatre productions (both at Chatfield and elsewhere!)
• Enrolling in theatre classes at Chatfield

• Volunteering at theatre-related organizations (like the JeffCo Costume Connection or the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities)

In 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act classified the arts, including Theatre, as core subjects.  Researchers have found that sustained learning in Theatre correlates to greater success in math and reading, and students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds see the greatest benefits. Participation in Theatre education enables students to embrace the full range of the human experience and develop a myriad of skills directly applicable to a variety of future life opportunities. 

Theatre can help students develop 21st-century skills that are valuable in both college and career.

Theatre is fun!

Chatfield Theatre loves volunteers to help us assemble productions and run events.

• During productions, we hold weekly or bi-weekly Tech Saturdays to construct and paint our set, costumes and props. For the production schedule, check with your student or email Olivia Newman at olivia.newman@jeffco.k12.co.us.
• Chaperoning field trips, such as the yearly JeffCo Theatre Festival or Colorado Thespian Festival, is a great way to get involved in the greater Jeffco Public Schools theatre community.
• Planning and orchestrating fundraisers, meals for tech week for productions, theatre student bondings and other events brightens our community.
• If you have other fun ideas, please reach out!

Current volunteering opportunities

Colorado Thespian Conference: Dec. 7-9

This annual conference showcases theatre students from the state of Colorado. Participants see productions from other schools, participate in workshops and observe individual events and competitions. This is a three-day overnight field trip, in which chaperones are expected to stay in a hotel in downtown Denver throughout the duration of the conference.
