Regular, daily attendance in class is of prime importance in the educational process. All students are expected to attend school for all days of the established school calendar as approved annually by the Jeffco Board of Education and in compliance with the Colorado School Attendance Law.
Attendance is the responsibility of the student, parents and the school. The importance of regular daily attendance as a basis for academic achievement cannot be overemphasized. All absences have a negative impact on learning regardless of the attempts to make up work.
The Board of Education believes that the duplication of the classroom experience cannot be accomplished with after-school assignments. The school cannot teach students who are not present. The regular contact of the students with one another in the classroom and their participation in a well-planned instructional activity under the guidance of a competent teacher are vital to this purpose.
90% Attendance Policy
Students must maintain 90% attendance to be eligible to attend and participate in various school events, including any school dances or field trips. The 90% attendance only applies to unexcused absences.
This policy applies to students wishing to attend dances at other schools as well.
Field trips that are required for class and have an outcome on the student’s grade do not apply to this policy.
Absences
Excused
Parents must provide a valid reason for an absence to be considered excused. The following shall be considered valid reasons for an excused absence:
- A student who is temporarily ill or injured
- A student whose absence is approved by school administration on a prearranged basis
- A student who is absent for an extended period due to physical, mental or emotional disability
- Absences including funerals, illness, injury, legal obligations, medical procedures, religious observations and extenuating circumstances as determined by the principal
- A student who is attending a school-sponsored activity or who is receiving Jeffco educational services shall not be considered absent for attendance reporting purposes.
No more than three single-period or partial-day absences in a semester will be excused without documentation. To excuse a single-period or partial-day absence, students will need to provide appropriate documentation from the appointment. To maintain confidentiality, a note stating the student’s name and date and time of the appointment is sufficient.
- Students who leave during the day for an appointment must visit the attendance office to obtain a pass to be released from class and sign out in the attendance office.
- Chatfield encourages families to be in contact with the student’s counselor or administrator if a student is dealing with ongoing injuries or recurring appointments that may result in regular school absences.
Unexcused
Unexcused absences are defined as absences not covered by the grounds for excused absences, including students leaving class without permission of the teacher or administrator in charge, students missing a class without parental approval, “sneak days,” “ditch days” and “prank days,” and circumstances determined by the principal.
Each unexcused absence shall be entered on the student's record. The parents or guardians of the student receiving an unexcused absence shall be notified orally or in writing by the school of the unexcused absence.
Unexcused absences and tardies may subject the student to appropriate penalties. These may include school sanctions and the imposition of academic sanctions for classes missed. Persistent absenteeism may, in the judgment of the teacher and school administration, result in a failing grade.
Important notes:
- Students will not be excused from any class to work on an assignment for another class.
- A student who is in the building will be considered unexcused if they are out of class without permission.
Attendance in Jeffco
The importance of regular, daily school attendance as a basis for academic achievement cannot be overemphasized. Attendance is a shared responsibility of the student, the families and the school.
It is the family’s responsibility to ensure their student attends school and to notify the school when their student is absent for a legitimate reason, such as an illness or family emergency. Each family should also ensure their student’s school has their correct contact information so that the school is able to communicate about any attendance issues that may arise.
