Mission Statement

Chatfield’s mission is to foster intellectual curiosity and encourage academic success to prepare all students to become viable and productive members of a global community.

History of Chatfield

The area around Chatfield was once owned by a man by the name of Isaac W. Chatfield. Chatfield, a former Union lieutenant of the 27th Company of the East Illinois Infantry during the Civil War, purchased 720 acres of land between the South Platte River and Plum Creek in 1870. He farmed the land until 1879 when he and his family moved to Leadville, where he was elected mayor and ran a grocery/hardware store. Plum Creek was dammed in 1976 after tremendous flooding that caused 13 deaths and over $300 million in damages. The damming project created Chatfield Reservoir, which bears his name.
